A Note to our Clients

People often ask us what we do after our busy tax season is over. The first things are payroll and property tax reports. Payroll tax returns are due April 30, so there is little rest between due dates. The reports on business property are due to the counties the first week of May.

After those two rushes, we work on the individual and corporate tax returns that were put on extension. But the fun stuff is the planning work that is done during this time. We look at potential sales, the potential savings starting a retirement plan, or projections of taxes based on the income earned through the year. We also have estate tax returns to work on.

Lately, we also have been working on IRS audits. Word is there will probably be more local IRS audits this year, especially on corporations. If you have a corporation, now would be a good time to check your permanent records like corporate minutes. The corporate minutes need to document any activity with the shareholders, such as salary, bonuses or rents. The corporate minute book is the first item that an auditor will ask for.
