A Note to our Clients

A few items of note that have changed this year:

If you need a copy of your tax return sent to the bank or any third party, we are now required to get a signed authorization from you.  We have the authorization forms available for pick up at the office or we can send you one via e-mail or fax.  If you need a copy right away click on What's New for actual form.

Another area that the IRS has been focusing on is the documentation for charitable contributions.  If the charitable contribution is cash and less than $250, you need to have at least a cancelled check or a written communication from the charity that acknowledges the date and amount of contribution.  If the amount of the charitable contribution is more than $250, there must be both a cancelled check, or some other form of bank record, and a contemporaneous acknowledgement from the charity of the gift.  The acknowledgement is considered contemporaneous if received by the date for filing the tax return.  For the non-cash contributions there are many rules.  For clothing or household items donations under $500, there must be an itemized list of items donated, their condition and a current receipt for the organization.  For items worth more than $5,000 you must have a valid appraisal.  These rules can be complicated, so please call us if you have questions.

The mileage rates for 2009 are 55¢.
